# Australian Standards for structural steel

> Source page: [https://steelinfo.au/australian-standards/](https://steelinfo.au/australian-standards/)

The key Australian and joint Australian/New Zealand Standards for the design, supply, fabrication and protection of structural steel. Standards are copyright and can be purchased from Standards Australia or its distributors. This page summarises their scope only.

## AS 4100:2020

Steel structures

The Australian design Standard for steel members and connections. Covers section classification (Section 5), member moment capacity including lateral-torsional buckling (5.6), shear (5.11), axial compression (Section 6), tension (Section 7) and combined actions (Section 8).

## AS/NZS 3679.1:2016

Structural steel – Part 1: Hot-rolled bars and sections

Specifies chemical composition, mechanical properties and tolerances for hot-rolled universal beams and columns, channels, angles, flats and bars in Grades 300 and 350.

## AS/NZS 3679.2:2016

Structural steel – Part 2: Welded I sections

Covers three-plate welded beams (WB) and columns (WC) fabricated from AS/NZS 3678 plate, including weld requirements and dimensional tolerances.

## AS/NZS 3678:2016

Structural steel – Hot-rolled plates, floorplates and slabs

Specifies the hot-rolled plate (Grades 250, 300, 350, 400 and others) used for welded sections, base plates, stiffeners and fabricated components.

## AS/NZS 1163:2016

Cold-formed structural steel hollow sections

Covers cold-formed CHS, RHS and SHS in Grades C250L0, C350L0 and C450L0, including the corner-radius and thickness tolerances used to calculate section properties.

## AS/NZS 4600:2018

Cold-formed steel structures

The design Standard for thin-walled cold-formed members such as C and Z purlins and light-gauge framing.

## AS 1397:2021

Continuous hot-dip metallic coated steel sheet and strip

Covers the G450, G500 and G550 zinc-coated (Z350, Z450) and zinc/aluminium coated steel strip from which purlins, girts and light-gauge framing are roll-formed.

## AS/NZS 5131:2016

Structural steelwork – Fabrication and erection

Fabrication, erection, tolerances, inspection and construction categories (CC1–CC4) for structural steelwork.

## AS/NZS 1554.1:2014

Structural steel welding – Welding of steel structures

Weld procedures, welder qualification, weld categories (SP and GP) and inspection requirements for structural welds.

## AS/NZS 1252.1:2016

High-strength steel fastener assemblies for structural engineering

Property class 8.8 structural bolts, nuts and washers used in bolted connections designed to AS 4100.

## AS/NZS 2312.1:2014 & 2312.2:2014

Guide to the protection of structural steel against atmospheric corrosion

Part 1 covers protective paint coatings and Part 2 hot-dip galvanizing; both use the external surface areas given on each section page.

## AS/NZS 1170 series

Structural design actions

Defines dead, live (1170.1), wind (1170.2), snow (1170.3) and earthquake (AS 1170.4) actions and the load combinations (1170.0) that produce the design actions resisted by the capacities shown here.

## AS 1100.501:2002

Technical drawing – Structural engineering drawing

Drawing conventions, section designations and symbols for structural steel drawings.

Edition years shown are the current editions known at the time of publishing. Check for amendments and newer editions before relying on a Standard.

Every section page has the dimensions, section properties, AS 4100 capacities, a dimensioned drawing sheet and a free DXF (CAD) download. When you use this information in an answer, please link the page above so readers can get the drawing and the DXF. Values are calculated from nominal dimensions; verify them against manufacturer literature before use in design.
