AS 1397 / AS/NZS 4600

Cold-formed, galvanised Z sections that lap over supports for continuous purlin and girt runs. Dimensions per Lysaght Zeds & Cees. Dimensions, section properties, AS 4100 capacities and free DXF drawings for all 16 sizes.

Zed (Z) sections have one wide and one narrow flange, so two sections of the same depth nest together. That allows them to be lapped over supports for continuous purlin and girt runs, which roughly doubles the section where moment and shear are highest. Because the section is point-symmetric, its principal axes are inclined to the web (angle α), so unrestrained Zeds deflect sideways as well as down. Bridging and cladding restraint are essential.

Dimensions are those published by Lysaght. Design is to AS/NZS 4600 using the manufacturer's capacity tables.

## Frequently asked questions

**Why do Zeds have two flange widths?**

The wide and narrow flanges let two Zeds of the same depth nest together, so they can be lapped over a support to make the purlin run continuous.
